Cross-Dock Automation Cuts Dwell Time to 4 Hours: Why Distribution Operators Are Rebuilding for Speed Over Storage
New cross-dock buildouts are shrinking facility footprints by 40% while cutting cargo dwell time from 24 hours to 4 hours. Here's what's driving the rebuild and what it costs to get there.
Cross-dock operations are getting smaller and faster. The average buildout today runs 85,000 to 120,000 square feet, down from the 180,000 to 220,000 square feet that dominated the 2018-2022 cycle. Dwell time has collapsed from an industry standard of 18 to 24 hours down to 4 to 8 hours for 60 to 70 percent of throughput. Throughput velocity has become the design constraint, not storage density. This is not a minor operational shift. It changes everything from dock layout to labor scheduling to equipment spec.
